IMMUNE HEALTH AND COLD PREVENTION

Hi guys. This is Kiran Krishnan - research microbiologist, clinical trial enthusiast, as well. We wanted to talk about immune health, about up-regulating your immune system as we get into the cold and flu season. And then, what should you do if you do start to feel like you're getting something.

I'll talk about what I do, and maybe that'll give you some ideas and tips. And of course things that you should talk to your doctor about, as well.

EXPOSURE

First of all, the most important thing in terms of protecting yourself against common cold, viruses, and things that you pick up from one another is just basic hygiene. Washing your hands. We all touch our face and nose and all that quite frequently throughout the day. There are numbers, like we do it 17 times an hour, or 18 times an hour. Anytime your hands are dirty when you're touching a doorknob or a door handle, the elevator button, or whatever it may be ... If you pick up a virus and you end up touching your face, you're going to be inoculating yourself. So taking some precaution and some basic sanitation of getting your hands clean, especially during the cold and flu season, is just perfectly fine. That really will help with reducing your exposure.

UP-REGULATE

Now, you will get exposed as well, as people sneeze and cough and things around you. So you want to make sure your immune system is up-regulated. Eighty percent of your immune system is actually in your gut. Most of the cells that are floating around in your nose and your lungs and your ears and your eyes are there to protect you against a viral invasion or macular invasion all start in the gut. Then the support system to feed those cells all come from the gut, as well. So it becomes really important to focus on having a healthy gut and the right probiotic that can actually interact with your immune tissue in the gut itself.

PEYER'S PATCH

There's an area of your gut called the Peyer's patch. It's in the ileum. That's the primary site where your T-cells and B-cells and all of these immune system cells are up-regulated. Now, what we like about Just Thrive Probiotic, the spore-based probiotic, is that they interact really well with those Peyer's patches, and they cause an up-regulation of those protective T-cells and B-cells. So if you keep up with your spore dosing, you will keep your immune system up-regulated so it can protect you throughout the cold and flu season.

BUTYRATE PRODUCTION

Now, the other thing is production of butyrate - adding in resistant starches, fermentable carbohydrates, or a good prebiotic along with the spores you're taking - because butyrate acts as a fuel source for all of these cells that circulate around your body and are looking for viruses, bacteria, and things that are looking to cause you illness. They will neutralize them.

IT STARTS IN THE GUT

So again, all of that stuff starts in the gut. The up-regulation and the production of these immune cells start in the gut. The fuel that these immune cells need in order to function for you also start in the gut, so:

- Taking probiotic spores will help dramatically

- Taking a prebiotic will help dramatically

- Increasing your intake of resistant starches or fermentable carbohydrates will help dramatically.

All of those things will up-regulate your immune response.

IF YOU START TO GET THE SNIFFLES...

What do you do if you do start to get the sniffles? I'll tell you what I do. Again, we don't want to give medical advice so talk to your doctor about any of these, but this is what I would do...

Right away, I start taking high doses of Vitamin C. I do upwards of three to four thousand milligrams a day of Vitamin C. There is a yeast-fermented extra that actually has some great studies on up-regulating the immune system and fighting off viral infections. It's a product called EpiCor and I use that product as well. I up-regulate my spores, so I go to as many as three to four capsules [of Just Thrive Probiotic] a day. You can't end up taking too much when your body needs it. You can up the dose, and it will help you quite a bit. And then I drink plenty of fluids, I make sure I'm getting in my basic vitamins. Then, try to get plenty of sleep. I use a far infrared sauna at home, which up-regulates some of the circulatory system as well and gets the lymph moving. I do that quite a bit, and that helps me a lot if I start to feel like I'm coming down with something or I'm getting run down.

SUMMARY OF WHAT TO DO

So again, to summarize:

- I up-regulate my spore intake. I go as high as three to four caps [of Just Thrive Probiotic] a day.

- I take upwards of four thousand milligrams of Vitamin C.

- I use the yeast fermentation extract called EpiCor.

- I will get in my far infrared sauna one or two times a day when I'm not feeling well.

- And then I make sure I get my basic nutrients. Your multivitamins should be a fruit and vegetable source multivitamin, not a synthetic one. It should be high dose multivitamins as well.

- Vitamin D is the last thing you can think about, because in the winter time, you might not be getting enough sun exposure to make enough Vitamin D. Vitamin D, through the Vitamin D receptor, up-regulates your macrophage and dendritic cells' ability to fight off infections as well. So you can increase your intake of Vitamin D if you start to feel like you're coming down with something.

Hopefully those will help you keep you safe and sickness free through the winter season. We'll check back again early next year and see how you did!
